Swimming Classes
Helen Diamond Swimming & Leisure established since 1995
At Helen Diamond Swimming & Leisure we use the ASA badge scheme and all children will aim to complete at least one badge per term.
Beginner Classes
Swimmers will be aiming for their ASA “ I can “awards along with Duckling badges which consist of varying skills and water confidence, graded 1-5 They will also be aiming to reduce their arm discs and eventually swim without any aids at all leading to their first distance badges 5m and 10m. Children who are able to swim for most of the lesson with none or 1 arm disc on each arm will be moved into Beginner Plus.
Improver Class
Swimmers are usually swimming unaided or with a single back float, we aim to see a swimmer start achieved water skill awards alongside distance swimming upto 25m, although a swimmer can swim 25m unaided we do start to teach breaststroke, backstroke and the start of front crawl, you may see a swimmer achieved a distance in a specific stroke such as 5m backstroke.
Improver Plus/Stroke Improver
Swimmers at this stage are much more confident with their strokes, starting to perfect the timing of the stroke and introducing the breathing techniques for each stroke. We would be looking to achieve 50m plus along side stroke awards and higher water skill awards.
Advanced
Along with mastering the full stroke we aim to develop advanced swimmers’ stamina and introduce specific drills that will lead the swimmer onto club swimming. We enjoy teaching diving and lifesaving skills with this group of swimmers. Most swimmers will achieve 100m plus and start to work through Bronze, Silver and Gold lifesaving awards.
Lane Swimming
Swimmers have been chosen from the advanced lane to go into our lane swimming/coaching programme, this is an intense hour of drills, technique speed and endurance along with all-round top swimming.
What To Bring?
Kit: Obvious things you will need are swimming costume (girls) or swimming trunks/shorts (boys), although please make sure the shorts are not too long as they can make it much harder for children when they are learning to swim by weighing them down.
Birkenhead swim school requires all swimmers to wear a swimming cap, we advise you to wear them at Calday.
Goggles may be worn but we would advise that they are already adjusted to the child’s head prior to the swimming lesson to save wasting time in the water trying to fit them. Generally, goggles wouldn’t be needed until the children move up to the Improver group unless there is a particular medical need for them.
It is also advisable to take off any Jewellery/watches just from a safety point of view and make sure all long hair is tied back. Finally, you will also need a towel and you may want to bring shampoo for a shower after the swimming lesson.
